Student Paper Contest

The Midwest Aquatic Plant Management Society (MAPMS) invites both graduate and undergraduate students to participate in our annual conference program. Students may present on research or educational topics relevant to aquatic plant management or closely related fields. Past presentations included biology, chemistry, ecology, genetics, and economics.

Student presentations are automatically included in the MAPMS Student Paper Contest. As part of the contest, a panel of judges from various backgrounds provide feedback to the students about their presentations. Presentations are also scored and the top three students presenters are awarded cash prizes at the annual banquet.

Students that wish to participate must respond to the MAPMS Call for Papers by submitting their abstracts.

Previous Winners:

During the 2024 annual conference in Columbus, OH, four students presented in the Student Paper (Oral presentation) contest. Each student made a significant contribution to our program though their presentations that highlighted research relative to Aquatic Plant and Algae Management.  MAPMS would like to thank each student for their time and preparation in presenting at our 2024 meeting; and congratulate the winners of the student paper contest:

1st place: Hannah Brown, University of Florida. Evaluation of small-scale subsurface penoxsulam treatments on water hyacinth and water lettuce.

2nd place: Ashley Wolfe, Montana State University. A practical guide for genetic surveying and monitoring for Eurasian watermilfoil management and initial insights on rapid herbicide assay development.

3rd place: Zhaozhe Chen, The Ohio State University. Field scale application of artificial floating islands for cyanotoxin reduction from residential raw sewage.

Congratulations to all the students.  We look forward to learning about the progress of their research and anticipate another outstanding group of students and presentations at the 2025 conference in Chicago, IL. Please help spread the word about opportunities to participate in both the program and poster presentations.
